Mitty rolls past Palo Alto
By VYTAS MAZEIKA | [email protected]

PALO ALTO — Palo Alto kept shooting itself in the foot, and Arhcbishop Mitty was more than happy to turn those mistakes into points as the Monarchs established the run to come away with a commanding 41-7 victory on the road.
Three of the four Mitty touchdowns in the first half came on drives that began deep into Viking territory, with running back Zondre Faraj-Washington crossing the goal line twice from 7 and 5 yards out.
“We literally made no corrections at halftime — none,” Palo Alto coach Danny Sullivan said. “There was nothing that we needed to fix, except our mistakes. Big games against good teams, you can’t afford to do that.”
Mitty quarterback Phillip Tran scored on a 1-yard draw with 33 seconds left in the half to make it 28-0 at intermission. He also connected with wide receiver Austin Kause on TDs of 14 and 13 yards.
“We just want to get W on the road so we could and take a week off leading into league,” Tran said.
The Monarchs amassed 245 yards on the ground. Paving the way was Faraj-Washington with 131 yards on 16 carries.

Pittsburg's huge second half too much for Mitty
By Daniel Mano, [email protected]
PITTSBURG -- Containing Pittsburg High running back Montaz Thompson is a tough task, and it was one Archbishop Mitty could only do for a half.Thompson scored three times after the break, amassing 336 total yards in leading the host Pirates back from a seven-point halftime deficit to a 41-14 season-opening win over the Monarchs on Friday night. "That's just the beginning for him," Pittsburg coach Vic Galli said. "We've been seeing, we've been waiting. He was ready tonight."
Thompson twirled his way to 294 yards rushing and earned high praise from Mitty coach Keith Burns. "I told him, I coached college football for 29 years and NFL for two -- he's a really solid player," Burns said. "We couldn't tackle him."
Mitty kept Thompson out of the end zone in the first half, taking a 14-7 lead into the locker room. The Monarchs made the most of their first possession of the season, driving 89 yards on 11 plays capped by quarterback Phillip Tran's 16-yard scoring scamper. After the teams traded punts, the Pirates answered. Quarterback Seu Kuka and wide receiver Donovan Crosse clicked, connecting four times as Pittsburg went on a 13-play drive to pay dirt. Kuka completed it by weaving for a 7-yard touchdown.
Mitty's Austin Krause ended the Pirates' next drive by picking off Kuka. Tran then hit Clay Crisafulli for a 42-yarder down the right sideline to the 1-yard line, then punched it in for another touchdown.
"My hat's off to them, because those guys came and played their tails off," Galli said. "It was pretty scary and hairy." Krause struck again late in the second quarter, returning another interception 30-plus yards to the 1. But the Monarchs' first try at a plunge up the middle was fumbled and a pair of penalties kept them from scoring before halftime. The Pirates owned the second half behind a defense led by Iffy Joyner (two forced fumbles) and Michael Pryor (three sacks). "We turned the tempo up," Galli said. "Our defense definitely stepped up."
Then there was Thompson, who ate up yardage by bouncing off and around defenders. On one drive he rushed for 29 yards and 25 yards, added 17 yards on a screen, then rushed for three more yards and a touchdown. His other scoring runs were from four and two yards out, though he gashed the Mitty defense to get there. "It was a good football game for a half. I like the way we scrambled around," Burns said. "You hate to take your lumps like we did tonight, but down the road it will make you a better team." For high school scores from around the Bay Area, check out our new scoreboard at bayareapreps.com
