Bellarmine rolls over Mitty 29-0
Even the biggest Bellarmine College Prep die-hard couldn't have pictured Friday night's game against Archbishop Mitty ending the way it did, with Bellarmine's backups taking a knee multiple times to keep from running up the score.
In the locker room before a 29-0 victory, the Bells didn't picture the Central Coast Section Open Division semifinal going that way, either.
"Ironically, we were telling each other, 'No way this is going to be a blowout,' " said Bellarmine's Travis McHugh, who did much of the work to ensure that it was. "We knew we had to just stay on them all night." Bellarmine's defense did just that, dominating for four quarters at San Jose City College and flustering a Mitty offense that has been one of the most explosive in the section. The Bells (11-1) held the Monarchs (7-4-1) to 120 yards of offense and got two sacks from Joe Gigantino and two interceptions from Alex Manigo.
